Helping Uncle Benjy

Living With Disaster

Help! Where should Uncle Benjy go?

Your family is in an uproar.  Like in every nice Jewish family, everyone has a say, and they are all stating their opinion at once.  There is lots of shouting and noise, but no decision has been made.

What's all the noise about?

Your uncle is a farmer and has received a letter in the mail from the Ohio Department of Transportation. The department has decided to build a highway  through Uncle Benjy's farm land. The department promises to help him create his dream farm in exchange for his land; however, your uncle is only given four choices of relocation.

Your uncle's choices are the following:
  • A location at the base of Kilauea, an active volcano in the state of Hawaii.
  • A piece of land along the San Andreas Fault, an earthquake fault line in the state of California.
  • Riverfront property in the State of Minnesota, located along the Mississippi River which floods regularly.

  • A heavily wooded area in California's Sierra Nevada, where wildfires occur regularly.

Uncle Benjy has asked you and your family (team members) to evaluate these places in light of the disasters associated with them in order to him decide which environment would be the best location for his farm. He realizes he may have to begin farming new crops and keep different animals on his farm, but the Department of Agriculture has promised to help him in this transition.
